Silken Windhound History

Francie Stull, a long experienced and successfull breeder of Borzois from the USA, decided in the late 70s to search for a second, smaller breed, that would fit in with the Borzois.

A smaller dog of wonderful character, long coat and overall good health, which should fill an existing niche in the group of sighthounds.

Coincidentally she noticed an advertisement of a Whippet breeder who was breeding a variant, which he called "Long Haired Whippet". From him Francie and her husband Chuck acquired several dogs with longer coat.

Over the following years Francie developed an elaborate breeding program, in which she crossed these "Long Haired Whippets" with carefully selected Borzois and Whippets.

Finally, end of the 90s, Francie introduced her new breed to the world via internet. Quickly this new breed found a group of enthusiasts in the USA and Europe and together they founded the "International Silken Windhound Society" (ISWS) in 1999.
